The main thing is to not allow yourself to be caught alone amongst a throng of heavily armored enemy units. Even riding through clumps of units without striking out with your weapon at all can be very helpful. Every range unit you distract, is less damage for your lads. It breaks their formations and distracts them from attacking your own units and really seems to speed things up.
Strike and ride away and strike again, rinse and repeat. If you’re comfortable with mounted combat, it really pays to circle the enemy and ride around amongst them and harass them.
